 Cultural visits

The Sobrarbe is rich on monuments, churches, forts and medieval defence towers. The Romanic architecture has an excellent representation at less than a km. away from Casa Ramiz: The Iglesia románica de San Martín in Santa Maria de Buil dates from XI century and is one of the best known in the “comarca”. If you are a lover of Romanic architecture, you must visit following website www.romanicoaragones.com

Ainsa villa medieval On that particular site, you will discover, besides other places of interest, all most important historic Romanic buildings of the area. (Old) Ainsa, capital of the “comarca” should belong among your planned visits. It’s medieval character of its cosy streets, beautiful Romanic church, square and defence fortress, as also a couple interesting museums will certainly charm you.

Another important historic town that should not be missing in your itinerary is Alquezar situated at the edge of the Sierra de Guara, direction South from Sarratillo, via Arcusa and Colungo. The spectacular village, its narrow streets and its “Colegiata” are perfectly restored.

Also don’t forget to go and take a look into the canyon of the “Rio Vero” below the village and to stop on the way back and have a look into this magnificent “barranco” from the couple viewpoints along the road. Lecina, another nice village lies a bit further at the upper course of the river. From there you can either take a short walk to a 1000 year old oak tree or go on a bit longer walk to go and see one of the numerous caves in the area with pre-historic rock art.

Other points of interest are the many old and sometimes abandoned villages in the Sierra de Guara and the hills around Ainsa and Boltaña. A further distance away are the cathedrals of Barbastro, Huesca, Monzon and Roda de Isábena in the “comarca of the Ribagorza Oriental” Also the cities of Jaca and Zaragossa are well worth a visit.
